Project Overview
Tabletop games, whether a board game or a card game, provide a unique physical design experience that allows interaction, strategy, and storytelling. The creation of a tabletop game requires careful consideration of rules, player experience, and engaging mechanics to deliver a memorable experience.
We were tasked with reskinning or creating a board game from scratch. We started with selecting an audience while taking into account their demographics and psychographics such as age, family orientation, friend orientation, etc. Our ultimate goal was to create a game that could also teach something valuable to our audience, which could be about social issues, animal facts, or any other topic.
Things I was able to achieve...
- Prioritize the needs, preferences, and experiences of the target audience by adopting a user-centric approach to design
- Consider the interconnected elements of a project, such as user interactions, visual elements, and functionality, by developing an understanding of systems thinking as it relates to design
- Create interactive prototypes
- Gather feedback through user testing and make informed design decisions or revisions
- Create a board game that offers an immersive and enjoyable user experience by emphasizing intuitive gameplay, engaging storytelling, and interactive components that encourage strategic thinking and social interaction
What is Designhel? Why did I decide on this design?
In Designhel, the game board becomes a canvas of opportunities, replacing traditional properties with coveted assets like established brands, design firms, and freelance projects. Harness the power of creativity as you strategically acquire and manage these entities, each representing a different facet of the dynamic graphic design industry.
Chance cards in Designhel mirror the rollercoaster journey of a graphic designer’s career. Encounter the highs and lows of the profession, from landing a dream project that propels your career forward to facing unexpected client demands or software glitches that challenge your problem-solving skills. Don’t forget about jamming the printers in the print cave!
But that’s not all - prepare to put your design knowledge to the test with engaging trivia cards. Delve into color psychology, typography nuances, design history, and more. Show off your expertise to gain advantages, unlock bonuses, or navigate tricky design dilemmas.
To add an exciting twist, immerse yourself in the world of “Borland Bucks,” paying homage to the “Borland Building,”  the home of Penn State’s Graphic program. Accumulate these valuable currency units as you progress through the game, using them strategically to invest in new projects, enhance your design skills, or negotiate deals with other players.
Designhel is a captivating blend of strategic gameplay and creative exploration, allowing players to immerse themselves in the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of graphic design. Collaborate, strategize, and leverage your design expertise to outwit opponents and emerge as the ultimate design tycoon in this thrilling and educational game.
